Backblaze has published their annual report on Hard Drive Stats for 2018. In case you haven't heard of Backblaze, they are a very popular cloud backup provider. As you might imagine, a large cloud backup provider uses lots of hard drives. In fact, "At the end of 2018 Backblaze was monitoring 104,954 hard drives used to store data." That makes this report an excellent buyer's guide, of sorts, if you're in the market for 4TB+ spinning hard drives (vs. solid state hard drives).
By the way, if you're not backing up your files to the cloud, you really should be. It is your last line of defense if you get hit with a ransomware infection and may be your only hope of ever seeing your files again. You can get a free 15-day trial of Backblaze here. I use them myself and highly recommend them to friends and family.
It's a super simple cloud backup solution that offers unlimited cloud backup including ransomware protection for only $5/month. That's a really small price to pay for peace of mind. If you're a small business owner and you'd rather just have someone manage all this stuff for you, please give us a call at 405-252-9691 or contact us via email. We can help you with more advanced backup/archiving needs as well.
Some highlights from the report:
"The 2018 annualized failure rate of 1.25% was the lowest by far of any year we’ve recorded."
"None of the 45 Toshiba 5 TB drives (model: MD04ABA500V) has failed since Q2 2016. While the drive count is small, that’s still a pretty good run."
"The Seagate 10 TB drives (model: ST10000NM0086) continue to impress as their AFR for 2018 was just 0.33%. That’s based on 1,220 drives and nearly 500,000 drive days, making the AFR pretty solid."
